The North West 200 is an annual road race organized in May in Northern Ireland. The races are held on the street circuit (The Triangle) on the public road between Portstewart, Coleraine and Porthrush. It is the largest annual sporting event in Northern Ireland with around 150,000 visitors.
Nowadays, several races are held in which different classes take 4 to 6 laps. This in contrast to the past, when all classes started at the same time and they worked with a handicap depending on their cylinder capacity. The race is still 53.3 miles (85.8km) long and was first held in 1929.
The race itself will be driven on Saturday, the training will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, with the first race on Thursday evening. This makes it look like the TT Isle of Man, but it is driven as a time trial and in the North West 200 all participants of a class start at once.
In 1929 it was decided to organize a road race following the example of the TT Isle of Man. The North West 200 was officially an international competition a few weeks before the TT Isle of Man. As a result, this competition was and was very interesting for the participants of the TT Isle of Man to test and adjust their engines beforehand. To this day, the North West 200 is a very popular race for both the public and the public.
Nice detail is that at 14 km southeast of Coleraine, in the town of Ballymoney there is a bar with the name Joey's Bar. Ballymoney was home to Joey Dunlop, one of the most successful drivers with many victories to his name. Unfortunately, Joey crashed in Estonia on June 2, 2000 during a race. The address of the bar is Atrim Park in Ballymoney.
